Cinque terra, Italy

Cinque in Italian means five; terra means land. Actually, Cinque Terra means the Five Villages along that beautiful rocky coast. Lands, villages - it seemed the word could mean either, in the past.

Having seen Ian Wright visit Cinque Terra on TV, we pre-booked (when booking the cruise in Singapore) this tour which was one of many for the day when Emerald Princess arrived in Porto Livorno. Cost a packet, the tour. Worth every cent.

The 5 villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore either cling to the cliff face or are concealed in miniature inlets along this coast. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Click on the photo on the right above to enlarge and see the location of the five villages. The photo on the left shows another little town, the landmark Positano which is used to sell Italy in tourism posters.

The 1.5 hour drive to Manarola was a real white-knuckle ride along mountain roads to enjoy the scenery. Ride back was easier, off Monterosso, along expressway, whew!
